There are a large range of foods that turtles can eat, including:
Crickets
Bloodworm
Plants
Frozen Turtle Dinners
Earthworms (chopped)
Raw Prawns (chopped)
Feeder Fish
Dried turtle food pellets
Whitebait (chopped)
Food items generally cost around $6-10 for a packet. The sizes and amounts vary.
It is useful to keep some frozen food readily available and get live food when you can.
Feeding should always be done in the water, as turtles have trouble swallowing on the land.
Baby turtles should be fed twice a day to start off with, while gradually reducing to once a day.
When turtles are over a year old, they can be fed 3-4 times a week (with less feeding required when it gets colder).
If turtles are kept outside or in very cold conditions, they may not feed at all and may even go into hibernation.
Make sure not to over feed your turtles. They will always act hungry, but if you keep feeding them when they don’t need it they can grow too fast for their shells.
Turtles can be fed some lean meats, but most general meat is too fatty so be careful what you feed them.
Turtles can be removed from the tank for feeding as this means less waste goes into the tank (they are quite messy eaters). I tend to leave my turtles in the tank for feeding as we have quite a few fish in the tank and they like to eat some of the turtles food as well. Make sure that you remove any uneaten food from the tank after around 10 minutes.
