Keeping Turtles

How to Set up Turtle Tanks

Turtle tanks are a necessity if you want to keep pet turtles. Pets need a good home and turtles are no exception.  Naturally, you would want your turtle to have a habitat while staying with you.  Keeping it in a box is just definitely not a good option.  If you are to provide your pet with the right habitat, then you have to consider important points first.  Some of these things include the size of your turtle tank, the land and swim area, and many more.

Swim Area

For the swim area, you should have a water level that is deep enough.  Keep it deep enough for the turtle to swim in comfortably.  To do this, you can keep the water level to at least as deep as your turtle’s shell.  That, at least, is the minimum water level requirement.  If you plan to keep your turtle indoors, then it is recommended that you heat the water as well.  Turtles have different preferences for temperature, depending on the species.  So if your turtle prefers warm temperature, then keeping the water heated is important.

Land Area

Higher than the water level is the land area.  The land area must be stable and well-built so that the turtle can easily climb on it when he leaves the water.  Also, for basking purposes, the land area must be heated with a lamp.  If you have an aquatic turtle, then a single piece of wood or rock would do.  But for semi-aquatic turtles, you must provide for more space for them.  This space is needed by the turtles so that they can move more freely and choose varying temperatures.

Water Filtration

Water filtration is essential.  It is very important to provide clean water for your turtle so that it will remain healthy.  As much as possible, it is recommended that you get one.  However, if you choose not to buy a water filter, then you should change the water in your turtle tank as soon as you notice floating particles in the water or as soon as it gets murky.  Not only will you have to change water regularly, the tank must also be cleaned to remove any bacteria that may be harmful to your pet.

Setting Up Your Turtle Habitat

1. Prepare Turtle Tanks - The first step would be to get an indoor aquarium large enough for your turtle.  About 20 gallons minimum volume should be good enough for a young but growing turtle.

2. Water Filtration and Temperature - Water filtration is very important.  Because of this, you should choose a tank filter that is strong enough to handle the size of your tank.  Also, since temperature is another crucial thing to consider, you must buy a water heater for the swim area and a 40 to 60 watts incandescent light bulb lamp for the land area.  Also, get a thermometer to keep track of the exact temperature of your turtle tank.  It is also important to keep the turtle tank away from direct sunlight.  It is very important for the turtle tank to be located in a place that is away from natural and direct sunlight.

3. Providing Accessories for Your Pet - When building land area, use bricks, rocks and wood.  These are some choices that you can use since they are durable and easy to clean.

A good tank set up will really keep your turtles happy and healthy.  Although the kind of habitat that you need to provide your pet with may vary from turtle type to turtle type, these are the are general considerations and guidelines that can help you provide the best possible indoor habitat for most types of turtles. Much consideration and thought should be put into making turtle tanks setups.
